Freedom In Every Step

Jul 5, 2026    Rev. Kevin C. Benton

This powerful message challenges us to understand the crucial difference between being set free and actually living free. Drawing from John 8:36 and Galatians 5:1, we're reminded that while Jesus purchased our complete freedom on the cross at Calvary, the Holy Spirit teaches us how to walk in that freedom daily. The illustration of someone paying off our house completely yet us continuing to mail payments captures this perfectly—we can legally own something yet still live like slaves. The sermon emphasizes that freedom isn't a one-time emotional altar experience with tears and worship music, but rather a daily walk of surrender and obedience. Victory in public is born from agreement with God in private, in that secret place where the Holy Spirit puts His finger on the ashes still smoldering on our altars—anger, lust, fear, bitterness, addiction. We're given practical weapons for this walk: specific scriptures to memorize for our particular struggles, learning to recognize the Holy Spirit's conviction alarm before we click, text, or speak what we shouldn't, and declaring the power of Jesus' blood over the enemy's lies. The transformative truth is that we're not victims trying harder through willpower, but victors agreeing deeper with who we already are in Christ—new creations walking in what He already won.
